VISUAL LANGUAGE
Seeing & Communicating As An Artist

A special 4 part Masterclass Series that puts a micro focus on foundational elements of Visual Communication to improve your watercolor painting. The idea of communication through visual language is as old as prehistoric cave painting. Artistically translating what we see to interpret a scene and express an idea to the viewer of our works is essential.
These 4 areas of discussion are VITAL elements to take your paintings to a level beyond reproduction and infuse your work with your unique voice.
Segment Overviews
It is HIGHLY recommended to work through the Series in order- each segment will refer to topics discussed in the previous classes
Session 1
Value

Learn to see, understand and control values to work for your painting through monochromatic studies and Pigment Management.
Session 2
Shape

Learn to identify and use shapes as a tool for composition. See objects as shapes and patterns and drop the nouns!
Session 3
Edges

Learn to pre determine where edges will be most effective and the techniques used to produce them. Hard, Soft, Broken, Lost&Found, Drybrush.
Session 4
Texture

Learn to use your brush as a tool and master the effects to use texture where and when it helps tell the story of your painting.
Hear what artists are saying about this Masterclass Series
•I’ve watched videos, read articles and chapters in books, etc. But your class today was just finally the “I can see it” moment. Now it’s like I can’t unsee it. FINALLY.
Thanks for such a thorough explanation and demonstration. Excellent. And thanks for wanting to teach this.

Thank you again for putting together and presenting the Visual Language Master Class. The 4 sessions (tone, shape, edges, and texture) were really so very helpful. I learned where I really need to work harder and where I might already be doing pretty good but can push and pull more.
I came away after this month with much more than I would have from just a simple demo. Although artists have talked about (pigment) consistency (this is like weak tea or this is like cream, etc.), you actually showed us what you were doing. This really helped me so very much in my understanding and in being able to do this outside of a small sample rectangle or square.
I don’t believe that I’ve ever seen a class that really focused on any one of these topics to the degree that you did this month. Some artists will say to make a tonal study or they might do a quick pencil or marker sketch or even a quick tonal study with watercolor but you went far beyond in presenting the theory and examples for us to look at, the why, and not just “this is the way.”
in the texture class, I appreciated that you didn’t just show us this texture or that texture or 350 different textures to use. You presented us with more of the push and pull and the consideration that was first introduced in the tone class of consistency of pigment but added the considerations of what is on the brush.
Thank you, Dan, for the time you devoted to preparing this series and for creating the series

I really enjoyed this Masterclass and found it very informative and will help me as I (hopefully) move forward. I will admit that I am in transition from the “adult watercoloring book” mode to a more expressive watercolor mode. Several years ago I really started to try and loosen up (for lack of better words) and have made some progress but not nearly enough.
While the weekly titles sound basic (value, shape, edges, texture), they really were much more for me, they were foundational.
By listening, experimenting and reviewing the video lesson multiple times, I began to see where I was failing in my perception of my reference scenes. There was alot of info packed into each week and the fact that we have lifetime access is great from my perspective, I will certainly utilize them.
