In-person workshops offer the most immersive, hands-on way to grow as a painter.
Through lessons in composition, design, drawing, color theory, and visual storytelling, my goal is to help you develop your own artistic voice—not just replicate watercolor techniques. Each day I will teach through 2- 1 hour demos as a road map for instruction. While demo copies give a clear path of the process, you are more than welcome to choose to paint your version of the scene.
The workshop emphasis is always on giving you the tools to make confident, creative decisions in your own work.
You’ll receive personal, one-on-one guidance throughout. Whether you’re local or planning an art-focused getaway, a 2-, 3-, or 5-day workshop is an experience that goes far beyond the classroom.

4 day Watercolor Workshop
Light, Mood and Visual Language

Santa Fe, NM
In addition to exercises around planning your painting and watercolor techniques, each day Dan will present 2 demos and you will complete 2 paintings per day. There will be a mix of studio and plein air work.
Day 1 will be primarily in the studio,
Day 2&3 will be studio in the morning/ plein air in the afternoon
Day 4 will be plein air in the morning with the afternoon in the studio with instruction on using your plein air paintings as reference
Dan will be presenting a wide range of subjects from local landscapes to street scenes to including figures in your work.

Newly Added! Dan will take you to some of his favorite locations along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Best of all, NO hiking required, all locations are only a short walk and easily accessible by car.
The workshop will focus on scene selection, visual editing for composition & design as well as control and application of watercolor. Through consistency of wash and proper use of tone learn to establish paintings and translate intricate details.

Dan’s workshop will focus on composition, design, consistency of wash and proper use of tone to help you elevate your watercolors to fine art paintings! Develop the ability to see shapes and tones, establish a consistent painting process, exploit “mistakes,” refine and further develop your technique and take your paintings to the next level…We’ll work hard and have fun…there will be serious work and serious FUN!
In his demo and lecture sessions, Dan will share some detailed skills: drawing rhythmically with a loose accuracy, keeping everything loose to go beyond just coloring in your drawing; Keeping connectivity and color harmony working for you; Using varying consistencies of pigment in relation to the degree of wetness in the paper; Varying types of edges and subtly shifting value and temperature to create visual depth and interest. Sounds like a lot!… but boy is it fun to start truly understanding and exploring the creation process.
