DANIEL MARSHALL
Dan Marshall is a Denver-based watercolor artist and instructor known for his expressive, tonal approach to painting landscapes, street scenes, and the figure. Blending traditional technique with an impressionist sensitivity, his work emphasizes value, edges, and atmosphere to create mood-driven, evocative scenes.
Working primarily plein air, his paintings carry a sense of immediacy and gesture, supported by a limited palette that reinforces clarity, restraint, and visual impact. His work has been featured in numerous juried and invited exhibitions, earning multiple awards, and he is a participating artist in the annual Catalina Conservancy exhibition.
Through his international workshops and popular online atelier program, Dan helps artists strengthen foundational skills, refine technique, and develop a personal visual language. His teaching goes beyond method, focusing on cultivating a way of seeing—empowering students to paint with confidence, purpose, and expressive intent.
Dan has written for Watercolor Artist and PleinAir Magazine, and has served as a juror for exhibitions including the National Watercolor Society, the American Impressionist Society, and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association. He is a signature member of AWS, AIS, and LPAPA, and a member of the California Art Club and the Salmagundi Club.
Daniel Marshall is a professional watercolor artist whose work is deeply inspired by life in the American West. He captures the fading beauty of rustic farms, working ranches, and the vast landscapes of Colorado and New Mexico, while his East Coast upbringing and years in California lend a lasting connection to coastal and nautical subjects. Across every scene, Marshall’s paintings reflect his distinctive interpretation of the American experience—honest, atmospheric, and timeless.
An award-winning artist and respected name in the tattoo industry since 1995, Marshall redirected his creative focus to fine art watercolor in 2013. His work has been featured in Watercolor Artist Magazine, Southwest Art Magazine, American Art Collector, and Plein Air Magazine, where he is also a regular contributor on watercolor technique and plein air practice.
Represented by Huse Skelly Gallery in Balboa Island, California, Marshall has exhibited widely, including a solo show at the Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper, Wyoming. A sought-after instructor, he teaches workshops across the country and leads a successful online teaching program that reaches students worldwide.
Now based in Denver, Colorado, Marshall continues to find inspiration in his travels and surroundings—painting plein air from the plains and ranchlands to the peaks of the Rockies. His confident brushwork and direct approach capture the immediacy and light of the moment in every painting.
